Overview
Laika is a 3D third-person narrative adventure developed as a university project using Godot 4 and C# (.NET 8). Unlike typical space exploration games, you play as the historical space dog, Laika, trapped aboard a sprawling, decaying space station. The game blends stealth, environmental puzzles, and a haunting atmosphere as you attempt to escape hostile pursuers and return to Earth.
Key Features & Mechanics
1. Narrative-Driven Stealth
- The Journey: Progress through three distinct levels—from the station’s exterior to its treacherous interior and a final high-stakes escape.
- Evasion over Combat: Navigate past patrolling humans and avoid environmental “mold” hazards. The experience culminates in a tense chase with a boss-level pursuer known as “The Abomination.”
- Cinematic Experience: Includes scripted story moments and skippable intro cutscenes to immerse the player in Laika’s perspective.
2. Technical Systems
- Inventory & Progression: A 5-slot hotbar system used to manage color-coded keycards required to unlock secure areas of the station.
- Speedrun Integration: Built-in speedrun timers for each level, with best records tracked and displayed on the main menu to encourage replayability.
3. Asset Pipeline
- 3D Modeling: Custom-built assets and character references developed using Blender.
- Audio Design: Features an original soundtrack and custom sound effects designed to enhance the sci-fi horror undertones.
